Note from the director:
Icarus flew - perhaps that alone is enough to understand how or why his legend has survived the 2000 years since Ovid famously codified the myths of ancient Greece in his Metamorphoses. In creating this icarus using Konstantin’s struggle with identity, vocation, communication, love and art, I was inspired by the work of many artists and their responses to this original myth - from painter Herbert Draper to poet Anne Sexton. I unexpectedly came across the work of David Hykes during this research and was immediately struck with its sense of profound invocation.  In this excerpt of his Kyrie: Opening, its solo human voice amidst the sense of vast space and its investigation of that space with it’s haunting melodic lines are the perfect accompaniment to our hero’s metaphoric flight.

Two evenings of dance, theater, and music created by nineteen artists and companies in residencies at the Dragon’s Egg to celebrate and showcase the artists and the Dragon’s Egg. The 2008 event is produced by Marya Ursin, artistic director of The Mystic Paper Beasts, with thanks to Carolyn Lord of Construction Company.
The Egg is the unique rehearsal space for the Mystic Paper Beasts, a mask theatre troupe led by Marya Ursin and Dan Potter (www.mysticpaperbeasts.org). The Egg is a freestanding hexagonal building at the end of a tree-encircled field in the countryside of Ledyard, CT. In this inspiring space, The Mystic Paper Beasts have supported the development of over forty artists’ work from New York and New England, through workshops and rehearsal residencies.
