The
Lear Project
Harwich Junior Theatre, Cape Cod, MA
September ‘07
Actress
Florence Phillips leads an all female cast as the doomed Lear in Andy
Arden Reese’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. In
The LEAR Project, Theatre LÎLA - in collaboration with the Harwich
Junior Theatre - assembles a multi-generational cast of women to dissect,
dissemble, and dissolve expectations of women in power. Exploding
the tragic story of monarch Lear, who’s crumbling body mirrors
the crumbling of an empire, this production places women in the roles
conventionally played by men and smashes the rules of the mother/daughter,
sister/sister, friend/friend relationship and the roles women play
when confronted with the temptation of ultimate power – who
will rise and who will fall prey to its omnivorous corruption? True
to its mission of creating provocative choreographic theater, Theatre
LÎLA promises a Lear that will not go gently into the dark night.
While
in residence at the Harwich Junior Theatre, Theatre LILA will also
hold an intensive performance workshop. Theatre LÎLA’s
Artistic Directors, Andy Arden Reese and Jessica Lanius, and founding
company member, Susan Schuld, will lead a performance workshop for
young people in conjunction with The Lear Project. In this 2 1/2
week after-school workshop, participants will delve into the physical
theater techniques of LÎLA’s 360º fusion, working
intensively with physical theater, voice, and movement techniques
to create the visual landscape of Lear’s theatrical terrain.
Workshop participants will perform the culmination of this theatrical
research in The Lear Project.
